Brown Man Clothing on BBC Soundcrew 105.5 FM

Yeah, I've got a good gig promoting Brown Man Clothing Co. apparel. On November 12, I got to do a stint on the 'Desi Live' radio show hosted by the BBC Soundcrew.

Jon-E of BBC Soundcrew fuses music genres with indian/desi beats. The result? Funky bhangra beats that you won't hear anywhere else.

Jon-E was really cool and laid back. Greeted me and asked me what I wanted to do. Me? Free creative control? Is this guy awesome or what? I figured for the first time around, let's keep it simple and fun. We chatted about Brown Man Clothing Co., how it started, why Brown Man Clothing Co. is different and how Brown Man Clothing Co. embraces all that is South Asian.

After the history of Brown Man Clothing Co., it was time to give stuff away. After all, we love you in our stuff. Before Jon-E could even get the sentence out of "... we'll take the first caller..." the phone was ringing. We gave away a shirt in less than a minute. Also, just for the fans of BBC Soundcrew, we've given you all a special promotion code when you purchase anything from our website. Simply enter in BBC Soundcrew and you'll get an instant discount off of Brown Man Clothing Co. apparel.

What a great experience it was. In fact, so good, we're thinking of doing it again. Be sure to check back soon to find out when our next stint will be. Until then, keep it Brown!

Brown Man Clothing Co.'s fan base keeps on growing. Not that we're complaining. We recently met up with Rajiv Satyal, a wicked ass funny desi comedian whose comedy is nothing but 'fun sized' (see his show to get the humour!).
Bottom line is that Rajiv likes Brown Man Clothing Co. stuff. He likes it so much that we are the works of collaborating ideas for his Hindu-Muslim Stand-Up Comedy, 'Make Chai Not War'.

Hijab 101

There is nothing that I enjoy more than after a gruelling week of 'working' at Brown Man Clothing Co. is to head down to the local desi area for some great Indian food.

Last week a few of us ventured off to this great little mom and pop shop for some nan and chicken tikka. The owners, typical auntie and uncle ji types welcomed us in the true desi fashion by plopping menus down on our table and leaving us to ourselves for about 10 minutes before anyone came to get our drink orders.

Instead of the typical submissive under the table working FOB server, we were approached by a pretty hijabi young girl by the name of Hina. She took our orders and upon returning, glanced at our designers 'Hijabi's Are Hot!' shirt. We all sat waiting for a response. With a cute innocent smile, she looked at us all and said "I like that shirt!". We invited her to sit with us and to tell us her perception on what it is like being a Muslim woman that wears a hijab.

Hina related stories about being called a 'terrorists wife' or a 'terrorists whore' in university. She told us about having her hijab tugged at during lectures at school. But inspite of all this, Hina does not let any of this bother her. Instead, she uses events such as these to educate people on Islam and what it is like to be a Muslim woman.

"People who do not understand Islam will always have a prejudice against it. They understand that we do not eat pork and that we pray on a carpet," Hina states. "But what they don't understand is that Islam means peace and the religion itself preaches peace. What the Western world knows about Islam is what is broadcasted on television in order to make news worthy news."

Hina did state how she fears for the future for herself as a Muslim woman and if the prejudices that she faces today is a sign of things to come. She did state that she felt some sense of relief that Brown Man Clothing Co. is at least trying to portray women that wear the hijab as beautiful and not as repressed.

After leaving, bellies full, Hina did ask if she could forward an e.mail regarding a news report that she hopes will be a sense of inspiration for all Muslim women and for people who are trying to understand Islam. I promised that I would inclue the article in my blog so here it is. Do let us know what you think.

I Love Kebobs!

There is never a dull moment at the Brown Man Clothing Co. headquarters I tell you. If someone is not joking around about their wedding proposals or telling a story about an auntie or even making aunties jokes, then something is wrong! Our brains may have been taken out by canabalistic aliens.
Much like every first day of the week, we all gather and sit in our brown board room and get everyone up to speed on what is going on at Brown Man Clothing Co. . Our intern, Kashif, a quiet and rather shy guy, had a funny story to relate that made us all laugh until our bellies hurt. It goes something like this:
Kashif was at his local bank on the weekend and was being helped by an older punjabi lady. As she helped him, she kept on looking at his shirt, Mohinderpal's Kebobs House. Being oblivious to why she kept on starring at him, Kashif thought nothing of it. Just before he left, the nice bank representative stopped him to ask, "... this Kebob House... where is it?" Realizing what she had been looking at now, Kashif smiled politely and answered, "Oh, um, er, it is an old shirt, it is no longer around." With her dismay, she responded by saying, "That is too bad! I love kebobs! And your shirt says that his kebobs were spicy? I love spicy kebobs in my mouth!" With that, Kashif burst out laughing and left. You can tell why.
It just goes to show you, the clothes at Brown Man Clothing Co. are not your typical desi wear.
Got an interesting story to tell while wearing your Brown Man Clothing Co. shirt? Let us know about it. Post it here or send it to us at info@brownmanclothing.com. Until then, drink chai!
All Monhinderpal's Kebob House Shirts are on sale!!

Hijabi's Are Hot!

Welcome to the official Brown Man Clothing Co. blog site. The powers that be at Brown Man Clothing Co. assigned me with the task of creating a blog. That is what us marketing people do, we get the jobs that no one else wants to do! But don't tell them that I said that! So what am I to do? I guess tell you all about Brown Man Clothing Co. . and what we do and how we do it and who we do it for, etc. Wow, that may take some time. So relax, sit back, have a samosa, have some chai because here we go!
When people ask about Brown Man Clothing Co., they always want to know if we have ever receive hate mail regarding our images. What it comes down to is that you will never please everyone. Especially in our desi culture!
The short answer is yes, we have received 'negative' remarks regarding our clothing. Of course, as everyone can imagine, the bulk of it is about our best seller for men "Hijabi's Are Hot!"
The shirt depicts a line art drawing of a traditional Islamic woman wearing a hijab, a head garment, with the caption, 'Hijabi's Are Hot!'

What is the big deal? Some say that the hijab is to be a sign of modesty, a sign of a woman being humble and not an accessory to personify beauty. There is a story of how this image became and it when I asked the founder of Brown Man Clothing Co. he responded by stating; "... the inspiration came during a trip to the Middle East. While at a mall, I looked around and saw these goregous women all dressed in black with big beautiful eyes and sublte make up. I could not take my eyes off these women as even though they were covered from head to toe, there was something that was so intriguing! Something mysterious! It was then, when I missed my mouth while trying to take a sip from my chai that 'Hijabi's are hot!'"
Recently, during a South Asian festival, I saw a young male wearing this shirt. Beside him, was his mother who was wearing a hijab. I felt compelled to ask his mother what she felt about the image. I downed my chaat papri and my lassi and asked her how she felt about this image. Expecting to get some sort of "These bastard teenagers these days! They need to get married!' response, she suprisingly responded by saying the shirt was in fact a good promotion of Islamic women and how it indicates that the women that wear the hijab are not necessarily uptight religious fundamentals but in fact modern, liberated women.
So really, is it pushing the envelope? Has it gone to far? Or is this the first step in accepting and advertising to the world how beautiful Islam really is? We'd love to know what you think.
